Frequently Asked Questions

Here you'll find answers to some industry questions you may have.

What is an Engineer?

This person is present in the recording studio or at the location recording and is responsible for the process of recording and/or mixing a project as well as technical issues and decisions. He or she operates (or oversees the operation of) the equipment during the recording process and makes creative and aesthetic choices in order to realize the sound and concepts the artist and producer envision.

Do you have to go to school to learn how to engineer?

Back in the day you used to be able to walk into a studio and say you want to intern and learn the craft of engineering and producing. These days it's not like that, mostly due to labor laws and opportunities available. Most studios only accept interns who have attended an accredited school to learn a baseline knowledge.  So most of the time yes.

what does a recording team look like?

To make sure all of your bases as an artist are covered while recording there are 3 essential people you need in the room.

  • A Producer, who will look after things like song structure, tempo, and right and wrong notes. He makes sure your vision comes to life in the music.
  • An Engineer, who controls the recording. Microphone selection, room tone, outboard gear, Pro Tools operation, and how the music sounds.
  • An Assistant, who is there to be the helping hand. They do the physical setup and routing of the microphones, console, gear, and Pro Tools ahead of and during recording.
  • Runner, Sometimes a 4th member can be assigned to a high demand session. This person will do things like make coffee and do food runs for clients and team members.

What DAW do you use?

Pro Tools. Pro Tools is the industry standard software for recording and audio editing. Chances are, every song you stream or hear on the radio has been recorded, produced, edited, or mixed in Pro Tools. The only other DAW I use is Logic Pro. Logic is great for getting a quick idea out. I use it to make quick demos when they're needed.
